His decision to pursue priesthood was also closely connected with his family’s traditional background. Contemporary reporting noted that, although several members of his family were employed in government service, Balamurali chose temple service as a means of continuing the family’s spiritual and ritual tradition.

Six Years at Thanthra Vidyapeetham
After receiving his initial instruction from his family, Balamurali Namboothiri joined Thanthra Vidyapeetham at Aluva, where he undertook the six-year Thantraratna course.

His qualification as a Thantraratna became an important milestone in his development as a temple priest and was subsequently noted in contemporary reports about his appointments to major temples in Kerala.

Among those he remembered with particular reverence was his guru, Kalpuzha Divakaran Nambudiripad. In an interview published by The New Indian Express, Balamurali attributed the successes in his life to the blessings and guidance of his gurus, specifically recalling Kalpuzha Divakaran Nambudiripad with great respect.

Education Put into Practice
Balamurali Namboothiri’s formal training was followed by extensive practical experience in temple service.
He served as the Melsanthi of Puthiyakavu Devi Temple in Kollam, with contemporary reporting noting that he had held the position for several years. He also served as Melsanthi of the Attukal Devi Temple for a year before his subsequent selection as Sabarimala Melsanthi.
These appointments provided an opportunity to apply the knowledge gained through his traditional and institutional education in the daily functioning of temple worship.
His later selection as Melsanthi of the Sabarimala Sree Ayyappa Temple in 2011 represented a significant milestone in a priestly career that had begun much earlier with family instruction and formal Tantric education.
